Innerwell

Innerwell entered a fast-moving treatment category with a deliberately different emphasis: the medicine may open a door, but therapy and follow-through are what help patients make sense of the experience.

Lisa Kennedy founded Innerwell as public interest in psychedelic-assisted mental-health care was accelerating. The opportunity was obvious, but so was the risk of reducing a serious treatment to the medication alone. Innerwell emerged from stealth in May 2022 with a model that placed psychotherapy, clinical screening and preparation around ketamine rather than treating the prescription as the entire product.

01

Entering a promising category with restraint

Kennedy brought ecommerce operating experience, including a senior role at Quidsi, while co-founder Dr. Jonathan Tobkes brought clinical perspective. The company raised $3 million in pre-seed funding led by Greycroft, with Looking Glass, Max Ventures and individual investors participating. Its first public promise was not universal access or a miracle outcome; it was to make a therapy-centered care pathway available virtually to appropriate patients.

02

The treatment is a sequence, not a shipment

Innerwell's program begins with evaluation by licensed medical professionals. Eligible patients may receive clinician-supervised ketamine treatment at home, with preparation, integration therapy and measurement surrounding the dosing sessions. The company has also built digital tools intended to help clinicians collaborate around a patient's progress instead of leaving each appointment isolated from the next.

That distinction matters in telemedicine. Sending medication can be operationally simpler than delivering coordinated care, but it transfers too much responsibility to the patient. Innerwell has described medicine as supporting therapy rather than replacing it. The framing makes the program more demanding to explain and operate, yet it also gives prospective patients a clearer account of what the company believes produces durable change.

03

Growth inside a tightly constrained market

After launch, Innerwell expanded its clinical footprint across multiple states and announced an employer-benefit partnership with Enthea. The company has also explored insurance access and digital behavioral coaching. Each expansion adds regulatory, licensing and communication obligations: availability varies by location, candidacy requires clinical judgment, and advertising must not turn early evidence into guaranteed outcomes.

Those constraints make Innerwell a strong example of a company whose acquisition strategy cannot rely on loud claims. Search content has to educate without diagnosing; landing pages have to distinguish treatment from hype; and conversion flows have to make room for medical screening. In a category still fighting stigma on one side and overenthusiasm on the other, the brand's most valuable asset may be its ability to explain where responsible care begins.
