SiPhox Health

SiPhox Health began with a hardware question: could the silicon-photonics technology used in communications make blood testing smaller, cheaper and more frequent? Its consumer platform is the bridge between that laboratory ambition and today's mail-in testing.

Diedrik Vermeulen and Michael Dubrovsky founded SiPhox Health in February 2020 after working in and around MIT's technology ecosystem. Their starting point was silicon photonics: the use of light on compact chips, a technology already central to modern communications. They believed the same manufacturing logic could reduce diagnostic equipment that fills a laboratory bench to a device small enough for the home.

01

A semiconductor idea applied to blood

The long-term product, SiPhox Home, is intended to measure multiple biomarkers from a small blood sample and return results quickly. The company labels the device investigational and available for research use only, an important distinction in a field where product ambition can be mistaken for a currently approved consumer service. While the hardware develops, SiPhox has built a commercial platform around mail-in testing.

02

Building the service before the device is ready

SiPhox launched its consumer testing platform in 2022. Customers receive a kit, collect a sample at home and return it for laboratory processing. Results appear in a digital dashboard alongside data that can be integrated from wearables, allowing users to view changes across cardiovascular, metabolic, inflammatory, hormonal and nutritional markers depending on the selected panel.

That sequence gives the company a way to learn about consumer behavior, logistics and interpretation while the more technically difficult home device moves through development. It also creates a demanding communication task. Biomarker dashboards can encourage useful questions, but they can also invite self-diagnosis. The service has to distinguish general insights and trends from medical decisions that belong with qualified clinicians.

03

Capital for a hardware-sized problem

In July 2023, TechCrunch reported that SiPhox had raised $27 million across seed and Series A financing, with Intel Capital leading the new round and Khosla Ventures among the participants. The funding supported a team spanning biology, engineering and mechanical design—an unusually broad set of capabilities compared with software-only health startups.

SiPhox sits at the intersection of direct-to-consumer health, diagnostics and medical-device development. Each side has a different sales cycle and standard of proof. The current mail-in kits must earn trust through transparent laboratory methods, privacy practices and comprehensible reports. The future hardware must clear a still higher bar. For the business, discoverability is valuable only when the content that creates it is as disciplined as the science it describes.
